The mission of the Huron County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities is to ensure the availability of programs, services, and supports that assist individuals with developmental disabilities to choose and achieve a life of increasing capability so that they might live, work, and play in the environment of their choice; to promote their health and safety; and to assist and support the families of these individuals in achieving these goals.




HURON COUNTY BOARD OF MENTAL RETARDATION AND DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES PHILOSOPHICAL STATEMENT


The philosophy adopted by the Huron County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities is based on the premise of inherent worth of each human being — recognizing that each person is valuable simply because they exist, not because of the way they think or feel, their potential for achievement or other traits. Therefore, Huron County residents, as well as others who experience developmental disabilities have equal value to those persons who do not.


As a provider of services the Board remains cognizant of the innate value of each person eligible for and receiving services. No person shall be discriminated against on the basis of race, religion, color, creed, gender, national origin, age, physical or mental handicap, and /or developmental disability with regard to the procedures used for and the provision of services. In planning and delivering services, the Board shall do so in accordance with all applicable Federal and State laws, while keeping in mind the individual served.


Individuals with mental retardation and/or developmental disabilities shall not be denied equal value, respect and opportunity. The Board recognizes that, regardless of individuals development and capacity for learning, all people will be able to achieve fulfillment when offered appropriate opportunities, education, vocation and stimulation. Further, the Board recognizes that each individual is endowed with the right the develop; to succeed or fail; to take risks; to engage in social interaction; to make choices and decisions and to participate in their communities.
